Uncured Cheese Price in New Zealand (FOB) - 2023
The average uncured cheese export price stood at $4,345 per ton in September 2023, declining by -1.9% against the previous month. Overall, the export price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in October 2022 an increase of 5.5% m-o-m. The export price peaked at $4,903 per ton in February 2023; however, from March 2023 to September 2023, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
Average prices varied somewhat for the major overseas markets. In September 2023, the countries with the highest prices were South Korea ($5,263 per ton) and Vietnam ($5,059 per ton), while the average price for exports to Malaysia ($3,742 per ton) and the Philippines ($3,848 per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From September 2022 to September 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Vietnam (+0.7%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Uncured Cheese Price in New Zealand (CIF) - 2023
In September 2023, the average uncured cheese import price amounted to $5,540 per ton, with a decrease of -2.8% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the import price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in November 2022 an increase of 18% month-to-month. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $7,198 per ton in December 2022; however, from January 2023 to September 2023, import prices remained at a lower figure.
Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major supplying countries. In September 2023, the country with the highest price was the United States ($5,691 per ton), while the price for India ($5,151 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From September 2022 to September 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Italy (+2.9%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
Uncured Cheese Exports in New Zealand
In 2022, shipments abroad of unripened or uncured cheese decreased by -13.4% to 67K tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year rising trend. In general, exports saw a mild contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when exports increased by 6.7%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of 77K tons, and then shrank in the following year.
In value terms, uncured cheese exports reached $311M in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +6.3% from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 14% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.
