Spice Price in Sri Lanka (FOB) - 2022
In 2022, the average spice export price amounted to $9,991 per ton, rising by 8.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, export price indicated mild growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, spice export price increased by +112.9% against 2018 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when the average export price increased by 76%. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the peak figure in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Mexico ($13,623 per ton), while the average price for exports to India ($6,964 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the United Arab Emirates (+5.8%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Spice Price in Sri Lanka (CIF) - 2022
The average spice import price stood at $2,135 per ton in 2022, with an increase of 27% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import price indicated a buoyant increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +7.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, spice import price increased by +90.0% against 2017 indices. As a result, import price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was India ($2,360 per ton), while the price for Russia ($886 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by India (+7.8%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
Spice Exports in Sri Lanka
In 2022, overseas shipments of spices decreased by -24.9% to 36K tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year rising trend. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.4% over the period from 2019 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 31% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of 48K tons, and then fell sharply in the following year.
In value terms, spice exports dropped significantly to $357M in 2022. In general, total exports indicated a buoyant expansion from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +8.1% over the last three years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +26.5% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 39% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $439M, and then dropped markedly in the following year.

Spice Imports in Sri Lanka
In 2022, supplies from abroad of spices decreased by -18.3% to 66K tons, falling for the second consecutive year after two years of growth. Over the period under review, imports saw a abrupt decrease. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 2.8%. As a result, imports attained the peak of 83K tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, spice imports expanded to $140M in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +5.9% over the period from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being observed in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 12% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.
