The average import price for vegetables; potatoes (other than seed), fresh or chilleds stood at $247 per ton in 2022, reducing by -6.2% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.9%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 an increase of 40% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $302 per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the countries with the highest prices were China ($310 per ton) and India ($305 per ton), while the price for Bangladesh ($225 per ton) and Pakistan ($242 per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Pakistan (+3.4%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average export price for vegetables; potatoes (other than seed), fresh or chilleds stood at $711 per ton in 2022, waning by -12.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when the average export price increased by 39%. The export price peaked at $1,031 per ton in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Maldives ($4,496 per ton), while the average price for exports to the United States ($425 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Maldives (+11.6%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports of Vegetables; Potatoes (Other than Seed), Fresh or Chilled in Sri Lanka

In 2022, supplies from abroad of vegetables; potatoes (other than seed), fresh or chilleds was finally on the rise to reach 154K tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Over the period under review, total imports indicated a tangible increase from 2019 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.7% over the last three-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, imports of vegetables; potatoes (other than seed), fresh or chilleds skyrocketed to $38M in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +3.8% over the period from 2019 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In 2022, overseas shipments of vegetables; potatoes (other than seed), fresh or chilleds decreased by -46.4% to 21 tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year rising trend. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate strong growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 125% against the previous year.

In value terms, exports of vegetables; potatoes (other than seed), fresh or chilleds fell remarkably to $15K in 2022. In general, exports, however, posted a prominent increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 172%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $34K. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the exports of failed to regain momentum.
