The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the production volume increased by 13%. As a result, production attained the peak volume of 470K tons. From 2019 to 2022, global production growth remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, direct dye production declined to $3B in 2022 estimated in export price. The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +1.6% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 27% against the previous year. Over the period under review, global production reached the maximum level at $3.2B in 2021, and then fell in the following year.

The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2022 were China (96K tons), India (82K tons) and the United States (57K tons), together accounting for 52% of global production. Russia, Indonesia, Brazil, Spain, Pakistan, Nigeria, Japan, the UK, Mexico and France lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 28%.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of production, amongst the leading producing countries, was attained by Indonesia (with a CAGR of +8.6%), while production for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports

World Imports of Direct Dyes And Preparations Based Thereon

For the third year in a row, the global market recorded growth in purchases abroad of direct dyes and preparations based thereon, which increased by 11% to 136K tons in 2022. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.6% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 13% against the previous year. Over the period under review, global imports reached the peak figure in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

In value terms, direct dye imports reduced slightly to $433M in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 23%. Over the period under review, global imports attained the peak figure at $442M in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2022, Belgium (23K tons), followed by the Netherlands (15K tons), Germany (8.8K tons), Italy (8.6K tons), Japan (6.8K tons) and Poland (6.5K tons) represented the main importers of direct dyes and preparations based thereon, together constituting 50% of total imports. Import Prices By Country

The average direct dye import price stood at $3,180 per ton in 2022, declining by -10.3% against the previous year. Overall, the import price showed a noticeable descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the average import price increased by 10% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $4,733 per ton. From 2015 to 2022, the average import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the United States ($5,704 per ton), while Belgium ($133 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Vietnam (+3.5%), while the other global leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.

Exports

World Exports of Direct Dyes And Preparations Based Thereon

In 2022, approx. 117K tons of direct dyes and preparations based thereon were exported worldwide; with a decrease of -7.9% compared with the previous year's figure. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.7% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when exports increased by 21%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of 128K tons, and then fell in the following year.

In value terms, direct dye exports shrank to $402M in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 24%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $428M, and then contracted in the following year.

Exports By Country

India was the largest exporting country with an export of around 46K tons, which finished at 39% of total exports. Spain (13K tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with an 11% share, followed by China (10%) and the Netherlands (8.7%). The following exporters - Germany (4.9K tons), Poland (4.8K tons), Turkey (4.7K tons), France (3.9K tons), the United States (3.4K tons), Taiwan (Chinese) (2.9K tons), Italy (2.8K tons) and Indonesia (1.8K tons) - together made up 25% of total exports.

Exports from India increased at an average annual rate of +7.2% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Poland (+56.7%), Indonesia (+39.7%), the Netherlands (+35.1%), Turkey (+19.3%), Italy (+6.0%) and France (+5.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Poland emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the world, with a CAGR of +56.7% from 2012-2022. Spain experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, China (-2.1%), the United States (-2.3%), Taiwan (Chinese) (-6.1%) and Germany (-7.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of India (+14 p.p.), the Netherlands (+8.1 p.p.), Poland (+4.1 p.p.), France (+3.4 p.p.) and Turkey (+3.1 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the global exports from 2012-2022, the share of the United States (-1.9 p.p.), Spain (-2.1 p.p.), Taiwan (Chinese) (-3.5 p.p.), China (-6.2 p.p.) and Germany (-7.7 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, India ($135M) remains the largest direct dye supplier worldwide, comprising 34% of global exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by China ($40M), with a 9.9% share of global exports. It was followed by Spain, with a 9% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in India totaled +6.8%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: China (-0.9% per year) and Spain (+1.1% per year).

Export Prices By Country

In 2022, the average direct dye export price amounted to $3,421 per ton, rising by 1.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, showed a noticeable curtailment. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when the average export price increased by 13% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $4,688 per ton. From 2015 to 2022, the average export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Taiwan (Chinese) ($5,079 per ton), while France ($1,798 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by China (+1.3%), while the other global leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.
