Germany, the United States, Hong Kong SAR and Bangladesh lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 15%.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of consumption, amongst the key consuming countries, was attained by Bangladesh (with a CAGR of +43.8%), while consumption for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Russia ($122M), China ($109M) and Germany ($106M) were the countries with the highest levels of market value in 2022, with a combined 49% share of the global market. France, the United States, Hong Kong SAR and Bangladesh lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 17%.

Bangladesh, with a CAGR of +34.3%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to market size in terms of the main consuming countries over the period under review, while market for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Production

In 2022, production of electrical or battery operated lighting or visual signalling for bicycles was finally on the rise to reach 273M units after three years of decline. In general, production, however, continues to indicate a pronounced shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 10%. Over the period under review, global production reached the peak volume at 406M units in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, bicycle lighting production reduced to $647M in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, saw a perceptible slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the production volume increased by 20%. As a result, production attained the peak level of $872M. From 2018 to 2022, global production growth failed to regain momentum.

Production By Country

The country with the largest volume of bicycle lighting production was China (158M units), accounting for 58% of total volume. Moreover, bicycle lighting production in China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Russia (42M units), fourfold. France (37M units) ranked third in terms of total production with a 14% share.

In China, bicycle lighting production remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual rates of production growth: Russia (-12.2% per year) and France (+0.3% per year).

As a result, imports attained the peak of 117M units, and then declined sharply in the following year.

In value terms, bicycle lighting imports shrank markedly to $461M in 2022. Import Prices By Country

The average bicycle lighting import price stood at $5.1 per unit in 2022, increasing by 4% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.5%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the average import price increased by 20% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the peak figure at $5.8 per unit in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Japan ($8.5 per unit), while Bangladesh ($0.7 per unit) was amongst the lowest.
