Chicken Meat Market Size in Uganda

The Ugandan chicken meat market declined to $X in 2022, approximately mirroring the previous year. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when the yield increased by X% against the previous year. As a result, the yield attained the peak level of X kg per head. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of the average chicken meat yield remained at a lower figure.

In 2022, number of animals slaughtered for chicken meat production in Uganda contracted slightly to X heads, remaining constant against 2021. In 2022, overseas shipments of chicken meat decreased by X% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. In general, exports, however, enjoyed a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of X%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, chicken meat exports dropped to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of X% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Kenya (X tons) was the main destination for chicken meat exports from Uganda, with a X% share of total exports. Moreover, chicken meat exports to Kenya exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Burundi (X tons), more than tenfold.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Kenya amounted to X%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Burundi (X% per year) and Rwanda (X% per year).

In 2022, supplies from abroad of chicken meat was finally on the rise to reach X tons after three years of decline. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a abrupt decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, chicken meat imports surged to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, showed a abrupt slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Belgium (X tons), Poland (X tons) and Thailand (X tons) were the main suppliers of chicken meat imports to Uganda, with a combined X% share of total imports. Brazil, Kenya and the Netherlands lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further X%.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by the Netherlands (with a CAGR of X%), while imports for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.

In value terms, the largest chicken meat suppliers to Uganda were Brazil ($X), Belgium ($X) and Poland ($X), with a combined X% share of total imports.
