From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of production, amongst the main producing countries, was attained by Zambia (with a CAGR of X%), while production for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In 2022, the average yield of spices in SADC surged to X tons per ha, with an increase of X% compared with the year before. Overall, the yield saw a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, the yield reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.
In 2022, the total area harvested in terms of spices production in SADC fell to X ha, approximately reflecting 2021. Total exports indicated buoyant growth from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of X% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by X% against 2019 indices. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, spice exports stood at $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a resilient increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of X%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
Madagascar represented the major exporting country with an export of around X tons, which reached X% of total exports. It was distantly followed by South Africa (X tons), Tanzania (X tons) and Zambia (X tons), together committing a X% share of total exports. Comoros (X tons) and Zimbabwe (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Exports from Madagascar increased at an average annual rate of X% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Comoros (X%), Zambia (X%), South Africa (X%) and Tanzania (X%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Comoros emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of X% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Zimbabwe (X%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Madagascar (X p.p.), Zambia (X p.p.) and Comoros (X p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Zimbabwe (X p.p.), Tanzania (X p.p.) and South Africa (X p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.
In value terms, Madagascar ($X) remains the largest spice supplier in SADC, comprising X% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by South Africa ($X), with an X% share of total exports. It was followed by Tanzania, with a X% share.
In Madagascar, spice exports increased at an average annual rate of X% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: South Africa (X% per year) and Tanzania (X% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2022, with a decrease of X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, showed a tangible expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 an increase of X% against the previous year. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by X%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2021, and then shrank in the following year.

The total import value increased at an average annual rate of X% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when imports increased by X% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
South Africa dominates imports structure, amounting to X tons, which was near X% of total imports in 2022. Botswana (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Namibia (X tons) and Swaziland (X tons). All these countries together held approx. X% share of total imports. Lesotho (X tons), Mauritius (X tons), Zambia (X tons), Angola (X tons), Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons) and Mozambique (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Imports into South Africa increased at an average annual rate of X% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Democratic Republic of the Congo (X%), Lesotho (X%), Mozambique (X%), Swaziland (X%), Namibia (X%), Botswana (X%) and Angola (X%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Democratic Republic of the Congo emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of X% from 2012-2022. Mauritius and Zambia experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Lesotho, South Africa and Swaziland increased by X, X and X percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported spices in SADC, comprising X% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Mauritius ($X), with an X% share of total imports. It was followed by Botswana, with a X% share.
