Canned Pineapple Market Size in ECOWAS

After five years of growth, the ECOWAS canned pineapple market decreased by -1.7% to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, consumption, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of the market failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, canned pineapple production shrank to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the production volume increased by 33% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production hit record highs at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2022, overseas shipments of canned pineapples increased by 54% to X tons, rising for the third consecutive year after two years of decline. In general, exports posted a prominent increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when exports increased by 119% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in the near future.

In value terms, canned pineapple exports expanded rapidly to $X in 2022. Overall, exports showed a buoyant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when exports increased by 117%. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

Exports by Country

Benin (X tons) and Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) were the major exporters of canned pineapples in 2022, amounting to near 41% and 33% of total exports, respectively. Ghana (X tons) held a 17% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Senegal (5.6%). Nigeria (X tons) took a little share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Benin (with a CAGR of +72.0%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest canned pineapple supplying countries in ECOWAS were Cote d'Ivoire ($X), Ghana ($X) and Benin ($X), together accounting for 96% of total exports.

Benin, with a CAGR of +82.4%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in ECOWAS stood at $X per ton in 2022, shrinking by -28.3% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, enjoyed a prominent expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when the export price increased by 144%. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2021, and then dropped significantly in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Ghana ($X per ton), while Senegal ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Benin (+6.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in ECOWAS

After two years of growth, overseas purchases of canned pineapples decreased by -6.6% to X tons in 2022. In general, imports, however, showed prominent growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 105%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2021, and then shrank in the following year.

In value terms, canned pineapple imports shrank to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed buoyant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 105% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2021, and then dropped in the following year.

Imports by Country

Senegal was the largest importing country with an import of around X tons, which amounted to 81% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Gambia (X tons), mixing up an 11% share of total imports. Cabo Verde (X tons) took a minor share of total imports.

Imports into Senegal increased at an average annual rate of +14.9% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Gambia (+51.2%) and Cabo Verde (+3.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Gambia emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in ECOWAS, with a CAGR of +51.2% from 2012-2022. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Gambia and Senegal increased by +9.9 and +5.4 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, Senegal ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported canned pineapples in ECOWAS, comprising 56% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Gambia ($X), with a 21% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Senegal amounted to +14.0%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Gambia (+48.7% per year) and Cabo Verde (+6.7% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in ECOWAS amounted to $X per ton, declining by -7.4% against the previous year. In general, the import price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 an increase of 21% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Cabo Verde ($X per ton), while Senegal ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Cabo Verde (+3.4%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
