In value terms, China ($183M), Italy ($162M) and Brazil ($143M) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of market value in 2022, with a combined 23% share of the global market.

Production By Country

China (57M units) remains the largest women swimwear producing country worldwide, accounting for 24% of total volume. Moreover, women swimwear production in China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, India (19M units), threefold. Bangladesh (10M units) ranked third in terms of total production with a 4.3% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume in China stood at +3.3%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: India (+0.2% per year) and Bangladesh (+3.5% per year).

Imports

In 2022, the amount of women’s swimwear (excluding of knitted or crocheted textiles) imported worldwide surged to 39M units, growing by 26% on 2021. Overall, imports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. Global imports peaked at 52M units in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, women swimwear imports surged to $336M in 2022. Over the period under review, total imports indicated a perceptible expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +36.5% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by 21%. Global imports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

Imports By Country

In 2022, the United States (13M units) represented the main importer of women’s swimwear (excluding of knitted or crocheted textiles), constituting 34% of total imports. The UK (2.6M units) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 6.6% share, followed by France (6%). The following importers - South Korea (1,625K units), Spain (1,604K units), the United Arab Emirates (1,216K units), Germany (876K units), Canada (797K units), Mexico (780K units), Australia (765K units), Greece (662K units) and the Netherlands (628K units) - together made up 23% of total imports.

Imports into the United States increased at an average annual rate of +10.7% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, the Netherlands (+75.2%), the United Arab Emirates (+24.8%), Mexico (+17.1%) and South Korea (+14.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, the Netherlands emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the world, with a CAGR of +75.2% from 2012-2022. Germany and Canada experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, the UK (-1.4%), France (-5.6%), Spain (-8.9%), Australia (-9.7%) and Greece (-13.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. The United States (+21 p.p.), South Korea (+3 p.p.), the United Arab Emirates (+2.7 p.p.), the Netherlands (+1.6 p.p.) and Mexico (+1.6 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the global imports, while Australia, France, Greece and Spain saw its share reduced by -3.5%, -4.9%, -5.3% and -6.4% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the United States ($58M), France ($38M) and Spain ($23M) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 36% share of global imports. Germany, the UK, South Korea, the Netherlands, Greece, the United Arab Emirates, Canada, Australia and Mexico lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 28%.

The Netherlands, with a CAGR of +89.3%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices By Country

In 2022, the average women swimwear import price amounted to $8.5 per unit, which is down by -6.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import price indicated perceptible growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.6% over the last decade. From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to women swimwear exports from China stood at +16.5%. At the same time, Bangladesh (+24.2%), Indonesia (+19.2%), Greece (+15.1%), Turkey (+11.9%), France (+11.4%), Vietnam (+9.4%), the United States (+2.9%) and Spain (+1.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Bangladesh emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the world, with a CAGR of +24.2% from 2012-2022. In value terms, China ($60M) remains the largest women swimwear supplier worldwide, comprising 19% of global exports. The second position in the ranking was held by France ($24M), with a 7.7% share of global exports. It was followed by Indonesia, with a 6.1% share.
