Whey Price in the United States (FOB) - 2023

The average whey export price stood at $1,071 per ton in September 2023, growing by 3.6% against the previous month. In general, the export price, however, saw a mild setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in November 2022 an increase of 9.3% month-to-month. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $1,434 per ton. From December 2022 to September 2023, the the average export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by the country of destination: the country with the highest price was Japan ($1,531 per ton), while the average price for exports to Vietnam ($637 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From September 2022 to September 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Canada (+1.5%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Whey Price in the United States (CIF) - 2023

The average whey import price stood at $2,507 per ton in September 2023, which is down by -8.9% against the previous month. Overall, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in January 2023 when the average import price increased by 53% m-o-m. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the peak figure at $3,227 per ton in February 2023; however, from March 2023 to September 2023, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In September 2023, the country with the highest price was Denmark ($11,144 per ton), while the price for Germany ($960 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From September 2022 to September 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Denmark (-0.4%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.

Whey Exports in the United States

For the fourth year in a row, the United States recorded growth in overseas shipments of whey, which increased by 12% to 614K tons in 2022. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +14.9% from 2019 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 25%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in years to come.

In value terms, whey exports skyrocketed to $822M in 2022. Overall, total exports indicated strong growth from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +17.2% over the last three-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +61.1% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 20%. The exports peaked in 2022 and are likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.

Whey Imports in the United States

In 2022, whey imports into the United States was estimated at 23K tons, increasing by 2.1% compared with the year before. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a slight setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 5%.

In value terms, whey imports soared to $56M in 2022. Overall, total imports indicated resilient growth from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +8.8% over the last three-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +71.5% against 2020 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 36% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in years to come.
