Sugar refineries in the United States play a crucial role in processing and refining raw sugar cane or sugar beets into the refined, granulated sugar that is consumed by people in a variety of food and beverage products. These refineries are responsible for extracting and purifying sugar from the harvested crops to ensure its quality and purity.
There are several sugar refineries operating in the United States, located primarily in the sugarcane-growing regions of Louisiana, Florida, and Texas. These regions have a suitable climate for growing sugarcane, which is a tropical crop. The majority of the sugar refineries in the United States are owned and operated by major sugar producers like American Sugar Refining, Florida Crystals Corporation, and ASR Group.
The process of refining sugar involves multiple steps. First, the harvested sugarcane or sugar beets are crushed to extract the juice containing the sugar. The juice goes through a series of steps, including clarification, filtration, and chemical treatment, to remove impurities such as wax, dirt, and other non-sugar substances.
Once the juice is clarified, it undergoes a process called evaporation to concentrate the sugar content. The concentrated juice, also known as syrup, is then boiled to remove the remaining water and create a crystallized form of sugar. The crystals are separated from the syrup through a centrifugal spinning process.
The resulting raw sugar crystals are then sent to a refinery where they are further processed to remove any remaining impurities and contaminants. This refining process involves several stages, including multiple rounds of crystallization, filtration, and centrifugation. The end product is highly refined, granulated sugar that meets the quality standards set by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
Once the sugar is refined, it is typically packaged into various sizes and forms, such as granulated sugar, powdered sugar, brown sugar, and specialty sugars. These packaged sugars are then distributed to various food and beverage manufacturers, restaurants, and retail stores for consumers to purchase and use in their everyday lives.
Sugar refineries in the United States not only contribute to the nation's sugar supply but also play a significant role in the economy by providing employment opportunities to thousands of workers. Additionally, these refineries adhere to strict quality control measures to ensure the safety and purity of the sugar products they produce.

This year, world sugar production is expected to rise by 3% to 193M tons. The growth will be encouraged by favorable weather conditions in most of the largest producing countries, as well as the providing exemptions on the neonicotinoid usage against plant diseases and blights in France, Germany and the UK. The drop in sugar production and shipments from Brazil will be offset by large volumes coming from Thailand, which will boost global exports by +2.6% y-o-y. The increased supply in the world market is to keep sugar prices relatively stable over the next two years.
