Sugar Price in Russia (CIF) - 2022
The average sugar import price stood at $689 per ton in January 2022, reducing by -5.1% against the previous month. Overall, the import price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in June 2021 an increase of 17% m-o-m. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the peak figure at $726 per ton in December 2021, and then shrank in the following month.
Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major supplying countries. In January 2022, the highest price was recorded for prices from Armenia ($850 per ton) and Peru ($821 per ton), while the price for Colombia ($654 per ton) and Mauritius ($663 per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From January 2021 to January 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Guatemala (+2.3%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
Sugar Price in Russia (FOB) - 2022
The average sugar export price stood at $717 per ton in January 2022, picking up by 5.9% against the previous month. In general, export price indicated a slight increase from January 2021 to January 2022: its price increased at an average monthly rate of +1.4% over the last twelve-month period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on January 2022 figures, sugar export price increased by +35.3% against July 2021 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in April 2021 an increase of 115% month-to-month. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $1,146 per ton. From May 2021 to January 2022, the the average export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In January 2022, the country with the highest price was Kazakhstan ($1,214 per ton), while the average price for exports to Ukraine ($610 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From January 2021 to January 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Kazakhstan (+6.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.
Sugar Imports in Russia
In 2022, imports of sugar into Russia declined notably to 282K tons, which is down by -26.4% against the year before. Over the period under review, imports showed a pronounced reduction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 112% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of 383K tons, and then reduced markedly in the following year.
In value terms, sugar imports fell sharply to $92M in 2022. Overall, imports recorded a slight descent. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 142%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $131M, and then contracted notably in the following year.

Sugar Exports in Russia
In 2022, shipments abroad of sugar increased by 120% to 8.4K tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Overall, exports, however, showed a precipitous contraction.
In value terms, sugar exports surged to $3.9M in 2022. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a precipitous descent.
