Lentil Production in India - 2022
In 2022, approx. 1.3M tons of lentils were produced in India; falling by -15.1% compared with 2021 figures. In general, production, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 35%. Over the period under review, production attained the maximum volume at 1.6M tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum. Lentil output in India indicated a relatively flat trend pattern, which was largely conditioned by a relatively flat trend pattern of the harvested area and modest growth in yield figures.
In value terms, lentil production rose slightly to $1.1B in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production recorded a pronounced reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 7.1% against the previous year. Lentil production peaked at $1.2B in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.
Lentil Harvested Area in India - 2022
In 2022, the harvested area of lentils in India declined modestly to 1.4M ha, falling by -3.8% on the previous year. Overall, the harvested area continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 13% against the previous year. The lentil harvested area peaked at 1.5M ha in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the harvested area failed to regain momentum.
Lentil Yield in India - 2022
In 2022, the average lentil yield in India contracted to 899 kg per ha, shrinking by -11.7% on 2021. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +1.4% from 2017 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being observed in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when the yield increased by 25%. As a result, the yield reached the peak level of 1 tons per ha. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of the average lentil yield remained at a somewhat lower figure.
