Price for Tobacco, Unmanufactured; Tobacco Refuse in the Dominican Republic (CIF) - 2023

The average tobacco, unmanufactured; tobacco refuse import price stood at $11,985 per ton in March 2023, rising by 25% against the previous month. In general, import price indicated tangible growth from March 2022 to March 2023: its price increased at an average monthly rate of +2.2% over the last twelve-month period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on March 2023 figures, tobacco, unmanufactured; tobacco refuse import price decreased by -12.7% against December 2022 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in October 2022 an increase of 38% against the previous month. The import price peaked at $13,721 per ton in December 2022; however, from January 2023 to March 2023, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In March 2023, the country with the highest price was Honduras ($31,447 per ton), while the price for Bangladesh ($2,773 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From March 2022 to March 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Nicaragua (+2.9%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the average tobacco, unmanufactured; tobacco refuse export price amounted to $9,233 per ton, dropping by -20.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, posted a prominent expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the average export price increased by 35% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the peak figure at $11,561 per ton in 2021, and then dropped remarkably in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Honduras ($24,413 per ton), while the average price for exports to Italy ($4,321 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Honduras (+12.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 27%. As a result, imports attained the peak of 51K tons, and then shrank in the following year.

In value terms, tobacco, unmanufactured; tobacco refuse imports shrank to $358M in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +12.3% over the period from 2019 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when imports increased by 34%.
