Price for Surgical and Medical Instrument in the United States (CIF) - 2023

In August 2023, the average surgical and medical instrument import price amounted to $118K per ton, dropping by -2.6% against the previous month. Over the last twelve-month period, it increased at an average monthly rate of +1.8%. The growth pace was the most rapid in January 2023 when the average import price increased by 18% m-o-m. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the peak figure at $124K per ton in February 2023; however, from March 2023 to August 2023, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In August 2023, the country with the highest price was Germany ($421K per ton), while the price for South Korea ($41,086 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From August 2022 to August 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mexico (+3.2%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the average surgical and medical instrument export price amounted to $231,858 per ton, picking up by 4.7% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, showed a significant decrease. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when the average export price increased by 15%. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the maximum at $7,159,601 per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Japan ($723,111 per ton), while the average price for exports to Denmark ($36,829 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2013 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Canada (-12.9%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Imports of Surgical and Medical Instrument in the United States

In 2022, the amount of surgical and medical instruments imported into the United States expanded notably to 223K tons, growing by 9.9% compared with the year before. Overall, imports continue to indicate a significant expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 5,353% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

In value terms, surgical and medical instrument imports expanded significantly to $21.7B in 2022.
