In January 2024, the average import price for steel, alloy amounted to $2,821 per ton, which is down by -5.5% against the previous month. In general, the import price recorded a pronounced contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in June 2023 when the average import price increased by 6.9% month-to-month. The import price peaked at $4,306 per ton in January 2023; however, from February 2023 to January 2024, import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In January 2024, the country with the highest price was France ($4,282 per ton), while the price for Belgium ($1,566 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From January 2023 to January 2024, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Czech Republic (-1.7%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.

The average export price for steel, alloy stood at $3,982 per ton in January 2024, growing by 8.2% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the export price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in June 2023 an increase of 96% against the previous month. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $4,941 per ton. From July 2023 to January 2024, the the average export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In January 2024, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($5,099 per ton), while the average price for exports to Iran ($2,020 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From January 2023 to January 2024, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the UK (+3.6%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the amount of steel, alloy imported into Turkey surged to 180K tons, picking up by 38% compared with 2021 figures. Over the period under review, total imports indicated significant growth from 2019 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +21.8% over the last three years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +80.6% against 2019 indices. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
