Price for Dried or Smoked Fish in South Africa (FOB) - 2023
In July 2023, the average dried or smoked fish export price amounted to $5,257 per ton, which is down by -59.1% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the export price, however, saw a slight increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in November 2022 an increase of 80% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $12,861 per ton in June 2023, and then reduced dramatically in the following month.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In July 2023, the country with the highest price was Namibia ($7,049 per ton), while the average price for exports to Botswana ($1,585 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From July 2022 to July 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Namibia (+13.8%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

The average dried or smoked fish import price stood at $3,444 per ton in 2022, increasing by 28% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price continues to indicate a perceptible expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the average import price increased by 121% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $5,028 per ton in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Norway ($9,075 per ton), while the price for Zimbabwe ($177 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Namibia (+5.9%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
