Price for Dried or Smoked Fish in New Zealand (CIF) - 2023
In July 2023, the average dried or smoked fish import price amounted to $21,159 per ton, waning by -8.4% against the previous month. In general, the import price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in September 2022 an increase of 62% month-to-month. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the maximum at $23,536 per ton in April 2023; however, from May 2023 to July 2023, import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin: the country with the highest price was Germany ($25,198 per ton), while the price for China ($4,574 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From July 2022 to July 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Norway (+14.4%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.

The average dried or smoked fish export price stood at $40,770 per ton in July 2023, declining by -8.8% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the export price continues to indicate a slight descent. The growth pace was the most rapid in October 2022 an increase of 52% against the previous month. The export price peaked at $49,972 per ton in December 2022; however, from January 2023 to July 2023, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In July 2023, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($60,456 per ton), while the average price for exports to Samoa ($29,617 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From July 2022 to July 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the Netherlands (+5.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Imports of Dried or Smoked Fish in New Zealand
In 2022, after three years of growth, there was decline in overseas purchases of dried or smoked fish, when their volume decreased by -3.6% to 1.1K tons. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +8.1% over the period from 2019 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 29% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of 1.1K tons, and then shrank slightly in the following year.
In value terms, dried or smoked fish imports expanded remarkably to $20M in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +11.1% from 2019 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 27%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.
