Price for Cocoa; Paste, Not Defatted in India (CIF) - 2023
The average cocoa; paste, not defatted import price stood at $4,300 per ton in July 2023, increasing by 11% against the previous month. Overall, the import price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in February 2023 an increase of 78% month-to-month. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $6,599 per ton. From March 2023 to July 2023, the average import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In July 2023, the country with the highest price was Italy ($11,050 per ton), while the price for Ghana ($3,138 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From July 2022 to July 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Italy (+1.2%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.

In 2022, the average cocoa; paste, not defatted export price amounted to $4,141 per ton, falling by -6.4% against the previous year. In general, export price indicated a tangible expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, cocoa; paste, not defatted export price decreased by -32.7% against 2020 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when the average export price increased by 66% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $6,157 per ton in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Kenya ($7,083 per ton), while the average price for exports to Mozambique ($1,010 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Malaysia (+34.6%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Imports of Cocoa; Paste, Not Defatted in India
In 2022, the amount of cocoa; paste, not defatteds imported into India soared to 5.4K tons, growing by 39% against the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate strong growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 88% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2022 and are likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, cocoa; paste, not defatted imports soared to $22M in 2022. Overall, imports saw significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 90%. Imports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

In 2022, shipments abroad of cocoa; paste, not defatteds decreased by -17.2% to 32 tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year rising trend. Overall, exports, however, saw a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 401% against the previous year.
In value terms, cocoa; paste, not defatted exports shrank dramatically to $134K in 2022. In general, exports, however, enjoyed a significant expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 561% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $184K. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.
