The average import price for coal; anthracite, whether or not pulverised, but not agglomerateds stood at $384 per ton in September 2023, growing by 35% against the previous month. In general, the import price posted moderate growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in December 2022 an increase of 161% m-o-m. The import price peaked at $588 per ton in February 2023; however, from March 2023 to September 2023, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In September 2023, the country with the highest price was the Czech Republic ($405 per ton), while the price for Poland amounted to $147 per ton.

From September 2022 to September 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Czech Republic (+10.4%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

The export price peaked at $955 per ton in January 2023; however, from February 2023 to July 2023, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Average prices varied noticeably for the major export markets. In July 2023, the country with the highest price was Germany ($1,065 per ton), while the average price for exports to the Czech Republic stood at $913 per ton.

From August 2022 to July 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Germany (+4.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

In 2022, approx. 107K tons of coal; anthracite, whether or not pulverised, but not agglomerateds were imported into Slovakia; jumping by 49% on 2021. Overall, total imports indicated a prominent increase from 2019 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +7.2% over the last three-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +50.6% against 2020 indices. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 50%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of 19K tons, and then reduced in the following year.

In value terms, exports of coal; anthracite, whether or not pulverised, but not agglomerateds surged to $9.6M in 2022. In general, exports, however, enjoyed significant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 64% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports of reached the maximum in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.
