Price for Butter and Other Fats and Oils Derived from Milk in Uganda (FOB) - 2022

The average export price for butter and other fats and oils derived from milk stood at $4,162 per ton in 2022, falling by -6.6% against the previous year. Overall, export price indicated noticeable growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, export price for butter and other fats and oils derived from milk increased by +8.3% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 an increase of 68%. The export price peaked at $4,457 per ton in 2021, and then dropped in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Kenya ($6,290 per ton), while the average price for exports to Egypt ($3,854 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Kenya (+6.9%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the average import price for butter and other fats and oils derived from milk amounted to $4,290 per ton, which is down by -10.6% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the average import price increased by 34% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $5,471 per ton in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Lebanon ($12,104 per ton), while the price for Rwanda ($864 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Lebanon (+16.8%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

Exports of Butter and Other Fats and Oils Derived from Milk in Uganda

In 2022, shipments abroad of butter and other fats and oils derived from milk decreased by -3.7% to 2.5K tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year rising trend. Overall, total exports indicated a strong increase from 2019 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +17.8% over the last three-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +63.5% against 2019 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 57% against the previous year.

In value terms, exports of butter and other fats and oils derived from milk fell to $11M in 2022. In general, total exports indicated strong growth from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +18.3% over the last three years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +65.4% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 47%.

In 2022, supplies from abroad of butter and other fats and oils derived from milk decreased by -5.5% to 51 tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year rising trend. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a significant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 248%.

In value terms, imports of butter and other fats and oils derived from milk fell rapidly to $220K in 2022. Overall, imports, however, recorded significant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when imports increased by 298% against the previous year.
