In June 2022, the average import price for apples, pears and quinces; freshes amounted to $750 per ton, increasing by 2.9% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the import price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in December 2021 an increase of 5.1% m-o-m. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $816 per ton. From January 2022 to June 2022, the average import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin: the country with the highest price was China ($1,878 per ton), while the price for South Africa ($737 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From June 2021 to June 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by China (+19.6%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.

The average export price for apples, pears and quinces; freshes stood at $1,025 per ton in 2022, increasing by 6.2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price recorded modest growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the average export price increased by 152%. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($3,059 per ton), while the average price for exports to Niger ($340 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Benin (+45.5%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports of Apples, Pears and Quinces; Fresh in Nigeria

Apples, pears and quinces; fresh imports into Nigeria soared to 78K tons in 2022, picking up by 35% against the previous year. Overall, total imports indicated a resilient increase from 2019 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +17.2% over the last three years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports decreased by -5.9% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 71% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of 83K tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, apples, pears and quinces; fresh imports soared to $60M in 2022. Over the period under review, total imports indicated a buoyant expansion from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +16.8% over the last three years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports decreased by -10.2% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 77%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $66M. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

For the third year in a row, Nigeria recorded decline in overseas shipments of apples, pears and quinces; freshes, which decreased by -17.4% to 7.5 tons in 2022. Over the period under review, exports showed a precipitous setback.

In value terms, apples, pears and quinces; fresh exports declined to $7.7K in 2022. In general, exports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 32%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $8.8K, and then contracted in the following year.
