Preserved Sauerkraut Price in Hungary (FOB) - 2023
The average preserved sauerkraut export price stood at $2,421 per ton in August 2023, rising by 5.4% against the previous month. Over the period under review, export price indicated pronounced growth from August 2022 to August 2023: its price increased at an average monthly rate of +3.1% over the last twelve months. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on August 2023 figures, preserved sauerkraut export price increased by +29.6% against March 2023 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in January 2023 when the average export price increased by 34% month-to-month. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the peak figure in August 2023.
Prices varied noticeably by the country of destination: the country with the highest price was Belgium ($3,127 per ton), while the average price for exports to Romania ($1,636 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From August 2022 to August 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Germany (+4.9%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average preserved sauerkraut import price stood at $2,321 per ton in August 2023, shrinking by -3.2% against the previous month. Over the last twelve months, it increased at an average monthly rate of +1.6%. The growth pace was the most rapid in May 2023 an increase of 21% m-o-m. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $2,829 per ton. From June 2023 to August 2023, the average import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In August 2023, the country with the highest price was Austria ($6,833 per ton), while the price for France ($1,409 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From August 2022 to August 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Austria (+7.8%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
Preserved Sauerkraut Exports in Hungary
In 2022, overseas shipments of preserved sauerkraut decreased by -0.3% to 21K tons, falling for the second consecutive year after two years of growth. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.0% over the period from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 18% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of 22K tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, preserved sauerkraut exports reduced slightly to $35M in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +6.3% from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 15% against the previous year.
