The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 19%. Global production peaked at $31.5B in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.

The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2022 were China (11M tons), Turkey (7.3M tons) and the United States (5.9M tons), with a combined 29% share of global production.

At the same time, Egypt (+11.6%), India (+9.0%), Algeria (+7.1%) and Italy (+4.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Egypt emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the world, with a CAGR of +11.6% from 2012-2022. While the share of India (+12 p.p.), Italy (+3.1 p.p.), Egypt (+1.9 p.p.) and Algeria (+1.6 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the global imports from 2012-2022, the share of China (-14.8 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.
In value terms, China ($1.3B) constitutes the largest market for imported marble and travertine worldwide, comprising 55% of global imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by India ($328M), with a 14% share of global imports. It was followed by Italy, with a 6.3% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in China stood at -2.7%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: India (+4.8% per year) and Italy (+3.3% per year).
Import Prices By Country
The average marble and travertine import price stood at $271 per ton in 2022, flattening at the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.5%. At the same time, the United Arab Emirates (+38.9%), France (+25.7%) and North Macedonia (+13.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, the United Arab Emirates emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the world, with a CAGR of +38.9% from 2012-2022. Greece and Portugal experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, India (-1.5%), Iran (-2.3%), Italy (-4.2%) and Spain (-15.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. France (+3.2 p.p.), the United Arab Emirates (+2.5 p.p.), Greece (+2.2 p.p.), Portugal (+1.9 p.p.) and North Macedonia (+1.7 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the global exports, while Turkey and Spain saw its share reduced by -1.5% and -8.2% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Turkey ($645M), Italy ($350M) and Greece ($149M) were the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, together accounting for 59% of global exports. Iran, Portugal, the United Arab Emirates, North Macedonia, Spain, India and France lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 23%.
Among the main exporting countries, the United Arab Emirates, with a CAGR of +36.7%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices By Country
The average marble and travertine export price stood at $219 per ton in 2022, with an increase of 1.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when the average export price increased by 20%. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the maximum in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
