The country with the largest volume of maltodextrine production was Thailand (1.7M tons), comprising approx. 46% of total volume. Moreover, maltodextrine production in Thailand exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, France (507K tons), threefold. China (477K tons) ranked third in terms of total production with a 13% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume in Thailand was relatively modest. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: France (+8.0% per year) and China (+0.4% per year).

Imports

World Imports of Maltodextrine And Maltodextine Syrup

Global maltodextrine imports skyrocketed to 3.2M tons in 2022, picking up by 21% on the year before. Over the period under review, imports enjoyed a prominent increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 55%. Global imports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

In value terms, maltodextrine imports soared to $2.9B in 2022. Overall, total imports indicated buoyant growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +84.1% against 2015 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 21% against the previous year. Global imports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

Imports By Country

China represented the largest importing country with an import of around 1.1M tons, which accounted for 34% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Germany (200K tons), Indonesia (158K tons), the United States (156K tons) and the Netherlands (150K tons), together constituting a 20% share of total imports. France (93K tons), the Philippines (80K tons), Belgium (78K tons), Mexico (72K tons), the UK (70K tons), Thailand (69K tons), Malaysia (68K tons) and Switzerland (63K tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

China was also the fastest-growing in terms of the maltodextrine and maltodextine syrup imports, with a CAGR of +59.7% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Indonesia (+13.8%), Thailand (+11.8%), Switzerland (+9.5%), the United States (+6.8%), Malaysia (+5.6%), the Netherlands (+3.6%), Mexico (+2.7%), the UK (+2.5%), the Philippines (+1.6%) and Germany (+1.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Belgium experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, France (-3.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. China (+33 p.p.) and Indonesia (+2.1 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the global imports, while the Philippines, the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany and France saw its share reduced by -1.9%, -2.1%, -2.1%, -5% and -5.5% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, China ($541M) constitutes the largest market for imported maltodextrine and maltodextine syrup worldwide, comprising 18% of global imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Germany ($201M), with a 6.8% share of global imports. It was followed by the United States, with a 5.8% share.

In China, maltodextrine imports increased at an average annual rate of +37.6% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Germany (+2.0% per year) and the United States (+8.3% per year).

Import Prices By Country

In 2022, the average maltodextrine import price amounted to $909 per ton, standing approx. at the previous year. Overall, the import price recorded a mild descent. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 16%. Global import price peaked at $1,052 per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the UK ($1,395 per ton), while China ($497 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Exports

In 2022, global maltodextrine exports amounted to 3.2M tons, increasing by 14% on the previous year's figure. Overall, exports enjoyed prominent growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 38%. Over the period under review, the global exports hit record highs in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, maltodextrine exports reached $2.9B in 2022. Over the period under review, exports enjoyed a buoyant increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 22%. Over the period under review, the global exports reached the maximum in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in the near future.

In 2022, Thailand (937K tons), distantly followed by China (500K tons), France (372K tons) and the United States (219K tons) represented the largest exporters of maltodextrine and maltodextine syrup, together mixing up 63% of total exports. Turkey (126K tons), the Netherlands (113K tons), Belgium (110K tons), Malaysia (106K tons), Germany (105K tons), Nicaragua (65K tons) and Slovakia (55K tons) took a relatively small share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main exporting countries, was attained by Thailand (with a CAGR of +47.2%), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest maltodextrine supplying countries worldwide were China ($436M), Thailand ($411M) and France ($353M), together comprising 42% of global exports.

Thailand, with a CAGR of +34.4%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices By Country

In 2022, the average maltodextrine export price amounted to $898 per ton, remaining stable against the previous year. Overall, the export price saw a perceptible downturn.
