Maize Price in Malaysia (CIF) - 2021
In December 2021, the average maize import price amounted to $334 per ton, growing by 1.8% against the previous month. Over the last twelve-month period, it increased at an average monthly rate of +3.0%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in June 2021 when the average import price increased by 20% m-o-m. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $359 per ton. From July 2021 to December 2021, the average import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major supplying countries. In December 2021, the country with the highest price was Argentina ($338 per ton), while the price for India ($297 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From December 2020 to December 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Argentina (+3.1%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
Maize Price in Malaysia (FOB) - 2021
In December 2021, the average maize export price amounted to $381 per ton, approximately reflecting the previous month. In general, the export price, however, showed a mild decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in October 2021 when the average export price increased by 48% month-to-month. The export price peaked at $494 per ton in May 2021; however, from June 2021 to December 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In December 2021, the country with the highest price was Singapore ($684 per ton), while the average price for exports to Brunei Darussalam ($362 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From December 2020 to December 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Brunei Darussalam (-0.1%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.
Maize Imports in Malaysia
After three years of growth, purchases abroad of maize decreased by -1.2% to 3.9M tons in 2022. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.5% over the period from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being observed in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 3.2%. As a result, imports attained the peak of 4M tons, and then fell modestly in the following year.
In value terms, maize imports contracted to $846M in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +2.5% over the period from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being observed in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 14% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $902M, and then shrank in the following year.

Maize Exports in Malaysia
In 2022, maize exports from Malaysia expanded significantly to 12K tons, increasing by 12% compared with the previous year's figure. In general, total exports indicated a significant increase from 2019 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +23.3% over the last three years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports decreased by -9.2% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 106% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of 14K tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, maize exports reduced to $3.6M in 2022. Overall, exports showed significant growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 110%.
