Maize Price in Hungary (FOB) - 2023
The average maize export price stood at $383 per ton in June 2023, approximately reflecting the previous month. Over the period under review, the export price, however, enjoyed a slight increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in November 2022 an increase of 95% against the previous month. The export price peaked at $1,107 per ton in January 2023; however, from February 2023 to June 2023, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by the country of destination: the country with the highest price was Germany ($651 per ton), while the average price for exports to Croatia ($283 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From June 2022 to June 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Germany (+7.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Maize Price in Hungary (CIF) - 2022
In 2022, the average maize import price amounted to $378 per ton, waning by -26.9% against the previous year. In general, the import price recorded a pronounced reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when the average import price increased by 54%. The import price peaked at $1,209 per ton in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was France ($4,378 per ton), while the price for Slovakia ($190 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Romania (+3.2%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
Maize Exports in Hungary
In 2022, shipments abroad of maize decreased by -13.3% to 2.8M tons, falling for the second consecutive year after two years of growth. Overall, exports saw a deep contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 10% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of 4M tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, maize exports contracted to $917M in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +2.2% over the period from 2019 to 2022; however, the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 14%.
