Lignite Price in Kazakhstan (FOB) - 2022
In 2022, the average lignite export price amounted to $101 per ton, increasing by 20% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +4.1%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when the average export price increased by 35% against the previous year. The export price peaked in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in the near future.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Uzbekistan ($96 per ton), while the average price for exports to Poland ($36 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Russia (+2.1%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Lignite Exports in Kazakhstan
In 2022, shipments abroad of lignites decreased by -33.4% to 282K tons, falling for the second consecutive year after two years of growth. Overall, exports showed a deep contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 26%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of 562K tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, lignite exports dropped significantly to $28M in 2022. In general, exports recorded a abrupt contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 33%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $49M. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

Lignite Imports in Kazakhstan
In 2022, supplies from abroad of lignites was finally on the rise to reach 188 tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. In general, imports posted a significant increase. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
