The average lactose import price stood at $1,784 per ton in 2022, increasing by 6.8% against the previous year. In general, import price indicated prominent growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +6.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, lactose import price increased by +47.4% against 2020 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when the average import price increased by 80% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $1,794 per ton in 2019; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($3,540 per ton), while the price for Belgium ($734 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Denmark (+13.9%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
Lactose Price in Spain (FOB) - 2022
The average lactose export price stood at $2,771 per ton in 2022, increasing by 37% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.8%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the average export price increased by 55% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Malta ($9,981 per ton), while the average price for exports to Italy ($1,337 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Malta (+6.9%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Lactose Imports in Spain
In 2022, the amount of lactose and lactose syrup imported into Spain expanded notably to 18K tons, growing by 11% against the previous year. Overall, total imports indicated a significant expansion from 2019 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +20.8% over the last three-year period. In general, total imports indicated significant growth from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +20.6% over the last three years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +75.3% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 22%.
