Iodine Price in the United States (CIF) - 2023
In September 2023, the average iodine import price amounted to $61,789 per ton, with a decrease of -4.1% against the previous month. Over the last twelve months, it increased at an average monthly rate of +1.1%. The growth pace was the most rapid in April 2023 when the average import price increased by 12% against the previous month. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $65,239 per ton. From May 2023 to September 2023, the average import prices remained at a lower figure.
As there is only one major supplying country, the average price level is determined by prices for Chile.
From September 2022 to September 2023, the rate of growth in terms of prices for Japan amounted to +2.2% per month.
Iodine Price in the United States (FOB) - 2022
In 2022, the average iodine export price amounted to $38,444 per ton, surging by 38% against the previous year. In general, export price indicated a resilient expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +5.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, iodine export price increased by +108.1% against 2017 indices. As a result, the export price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Average prices varied somewhat for the major external markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the highest price was recorded for prices to Germany ($44,394 per ton) and India ($42,864 per ton), while the average price for exports to Canada ($30,132 per ton) and Brazil ($31,276 per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to India (+10.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Iodine Imports in the United States
Iodine imports into the United States totaled 4.3K tons in 2022, growing by 3.8% against 2021 figures. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 6.2% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of 4.6K tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, iodine imports skyrocketed to $194M in 2022. Overall, total imports indicated strong growth from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +19.5% over the last three-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +70.7% against 2019 indices. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Iodine Exports in the United States
In 2022, shipments abroad of iodine decreased by -27.4% to 1.3K tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year rising trend. Overall, exports showed a noticeable slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 14% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of 1.8K tons, and then contracted significantly in the following year.
In value terms, iodine exports dropped modestly to $51M in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +12.0% from 2019 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period.
