View PricingHydrogen in Ammonia Production
Hydrogen is a significant component of ammonia production, making up approximately 75% of the necessary ingredients. Ammonia is a chemical compound that contains one nitrogen and three hydrogen atoms per molecule and is an essential building block for numerous industrial products. It is also widely used as a fertilizer in agriculture.
The Haber-Bosch process is the most widely used method for producing ammonia. The Haber-Bosch process was invented by Fritz Haber and Carl Bosch in the early 1900s. In this process, nitrogen and hydrogen gases are mixed over an iron catalyst in the presence of high temperature and pressure. This reaction is an exothermic one, producing a large amount of heat. The reaction ultimately produces ammonia gas, which can be collected and processed further.
The Haber-Bosch process requires a large amount of energy to function, primarily in the form of heat. Additionally, the process requires a ready supply of hydrogen gas. Hydrogen in the Haber-Bosch process is produced through the gasification of fossil fuels, such as natural gas or coal. This process creates a mixture of hydrogen, carbon monoxide, and carbon dioxide, which is then purified using different techniques like the shift reaction.
There are alternate ways to produce renewable hydrogen gas such as from electrolysis of water or reformation of biomethane (CH4). The biomethane can be derived from biodegradable waste material. Biomethane resembles more like natural gas than biomethanol and thus easier to transport and injects less CO2 in the process of Hassar TAC. This biomethane is reformed and purified to produce hydrogen.
Reducing the amount of fossil fuels needed to make ammonia production reduces greenhouse gas emissions. Additionally, new technologies such as electrolysis (using electricity from renewable sources such as wind or solar power to split water into hydrogen and oxygen) and waste biomass gasification (using waste material to produce hydrogen) are being developed as alternative ways to produce hydrogen gas economically and with a lower environmental impact. With a move towards a sustainable economy, green hydrogen has become a trendy topic in the field of NH3 synthesis.
