Ginger Price in the United States (CIF) - 2023
The average ginger import price stood at $1,629 per ton in August 2023, rising by 3.4% against the previous month. Over the last twelve-month period, it increased at an average monthly rate of +2.3%. The growth pace was the most rapid in March 2023 when the average import price increased by 19% m-o-m. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the peak figure in August 2023.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In August 2023, the country with the highest price was India ($4,097 per ton), while the price for China ($1,142 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From August 2022 to August 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Brazil (+7.0%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
Ginger Price in the United States (FOB) - 2023
In August 2023, the average ginger export price amounted to $2,593 per ton, leveling off at the previous month. Over the period from August 2022 to August 2023, it increased at an average monthly rate of +2.4%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in December 2022 when the average export price increased by 15% m-o-m. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the peak figure at $2,599 per ton in July 2023, and then fell in the following month.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In August 2023, the country with the highest price was Japan ($4,640 per ton), while the average price for exports to Ecuador ($1,515 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From August 2022 to August 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Japan (+11.8%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.
Ginger Imports in the United States
In 2022, supplies from abroad of ginger decreased by -0.4% to 108K tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year rising trend. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.3% from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 18%.
In value terms, ginger imports dropped significantly to $124M in 2022. Overall, imports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 22%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $153M. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Ginger Exports in the United States
In 2022, after three years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas shipments of ginger, when their volume decreased by -9.1% to 4.4K tons. Overall, total exports indicated a significant expansion from 2019 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +21.9% over the last three-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +81.2% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 51%.
In value terms, ginger exports declined to $9M in 2022. Over the period under review, total exports indicated a buoyant expansion from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +17.9% over the last three-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +63.8% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when exports increased by 51% against the previous year.
