In value terms, crude maize oil production contracted modestly to $2.4B in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production showed a noticeable slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 33% against the previous year. As a result, production reached the peak level of $3.6B. From 2015 to 2022, global production growth remained at a lower figure.

Production By Country

The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2022 were the United States (1M tons), China (528K tons) and Brazil (256K tons), with a combined 62% share of global production. South Africa, Italy, Japan, France, Belgium, Canada, Turkey, Argentina and South Korea lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 20%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for South Korea (with a CAGR of +14.0%), while production for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports

World Imports of Crude Maize (Corn) Oil

In 2022, overseas purchases of crude maize (corn) oil were finally on the rise to reach 419K tons after two years of decline. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a mild decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 27% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of 512K tons. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of global imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, crude maize oil imports rose remarkably to $562M in 2022. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a slight decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 44%. The United States (64K tons), Kuwait (57K tons), Singapore (50K tons), Tunisia (50K tons) and Saudi Arabia (50K tons) represented roughly 65% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Turkey (27K tons), making up a 6.4% share of total imports. Azerbaijan (13K tons), Egypt (12K tons), Belgium (11K tons) and Greece (9.7K tons) held a little share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Singapore (with a CAGR of +37.5%), while imports for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Kuwait ($89M), Singapore ($79M) and Tunisia ($77M) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 44% share of global imports.

Singapore, with a CAGR of +39.3%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices By Country

The average crude maize oil import price stood at $1,343 per ton in 2022, shrinking by -1.9% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 50% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $1,370 per ton, and then contracted modestly in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Azerbaijan ($1,974 per ton), while the United States ($511 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Azerbaijan (+10.6%), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Exports

In 2022, approx. 295K tons of crude maize (corn) oil were exported worldwide; reducing by -7.4% against 2021 figures. Overall, exports recorded a perceptible descent. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when exports increased by 30% against the previous year. The global exports peaked at 565K tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, crude maize oil exports fell to $388M in 2022. In general, exports continue to indicate a pronounced setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 45%. There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Hungary ($1,632 per ton), while Canada ($513 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
