Chalk Price in the United States (CIF) - 2022
In 2022, the average chalk import price amounted to $630 per ton, declining by -18.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, saw a mild expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 an increase of 172% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the maximum at $1,303 per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Mexico ($1,410 per ton), while the price for the Dominican Republic ($156 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mexico (+25.5%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
Chalk Price in the United States (FOB) - 2022
In 2022, the average chalk export price amounted to $9,821 per ton, waning by -52.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, continues to indicate a significant expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when the average export price increased by 219% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $20,523 per ton, and then shrank dramatically in the following year.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Australia ($41,837 per ton), while the average price for exports to Mexico ($2,142 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to South Korea (+36.8%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Chalk Imports in the United States
In 2022, purchases abroad of chalks decreased by -9.4% to 2.7K tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year rising trend. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.8% over the period from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 17% against the previous year.
In value terms, chalk imports reduced notably to $1.7M in 2022. Overall, imports continue to indicate a deep reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 25%.

Chalk Exports in the United States
In 2022, shipments abroad of chalks was finally on the rise to reach 130 tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a abrupt descent.
In value terms, chalk exports skyrocketed to $1.3M in 2022. In general, exports saw a strong increase. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
