This figure reflects the total revenues of producers and importers (excluding logistics costs, retail marketing costs, and retailers' margins, which will be included in the final consumer price). Over the period under review, the total consumption indicated strong growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, consumption increased by +78.6% against 2018 indices. As a result, consumption reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Consumption By Country

The United States (12K tons) constituted the country with the largest volume of carbon tetrachloride consumption, accounting for 33% of total volume. Moreover, carbon tetrachloride consumption in the United States exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest consumer, France (5.5K tons), twofold. Germany (4.8K tons) ranked third in terms of total consumption with a 13% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume in the United States totaled +6.7%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: France (-13.4% per year) and Germany (-11.2% per year).

In value terms, the United States ($719M) led the market, alone. The second position in the ranking was held by the Netherlands ($5.2M). It was followed by India.

Over the period under review, production, however, saw a slight shrinkage. Global production peaked at 57K tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, carbon tetrachloride production contracted modestly to $62M in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 49% against the previous year. As a result, production attained the peak level of $65M. From 2016 to 2022, global production growth remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Production By Country

The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2022 were Germany (17K tons), France (17K tons) and the United States (6.7K tons), with a combined 81% share of global production. China, the Netherlands, the UK and Iran lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 14%.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of production, amongst the main producing countries, was attained by the UK (with a CAGR of +84.7%), while production for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports

World Imports of Carbon Tetrachloride

In 2022, supplies from abroad of carbon tetrachloride increased by 42% to 17K tons, rising for the fourth year in a row after two years of decline. Overall, imports recorded a strong expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 82%. Global imports peaked in 2022 and are likely to see steady growth in years to come.

In value terms, carbon tetrachloride imports expanded significantly to $23M in 2022. Over the period under review, imports enjoyed a resilient expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 124% against the previous year. Over the period under review, global imports hit record highs in 2022 and are likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.

Imports By Country

The United States (5.4K tons), India (3.7K tons) and Japan (3.5K tons) represented roughly 74% of total imports in 2022. France (2.1K tons) took a 12% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by the Netherlands (12%).

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by India (with a CAGR of +156.2%), while imports for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the United States ($15M) constitutes the largest market for imported carbon tetrachloride worldwide, comprising 65% of global imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by India ($3.4M), with a 15% share of global imports. It was followed by Japan, with an 11% share.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the United States ($2,807 per ton), while the Netherlands ($203 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by France (-0.0%), while the other global leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.

Exports

World Exports of Carbon Tetrachloride

In 2022, after three years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas shipments of carbon tetrachloride, when their volume decreased by -13.7% to 31K tons. Over the period under review, exports, however, enjoyed a buoyant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 60% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of 36K tons, and then fell in the following year.

In value terms, carbon tetrachloride exports rose markedly to $22M in 2022. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a strong increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when exports increased by 117% against the previous year. The global exports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Exports By Country

France (13K tons) and Germany (13K tons) prevails in exports structure, together mixing up 83% of total exports. The Netherlands (1.8K tons) held a 5.9% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by the UK (5.2%). The following exporters - India (732 tons) and Belgium (549 tons) - each recorded a 4.1% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the key exporting countries, was attained by the Netherlands (with a CAGR of +322.8%), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest carbon tetrachloride supplying countries worldwide were France ($8M), Germany ($7.5M) and India ($2.6M), together accounting for 84% of global exports. The Netherlands, the UK and Belgium lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 15%.

Among the main exporting countries, the UK, with a CAGR of +203.5%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices By Country

The average carbon tetrachloride export price stood at $699 per ton in 2022, growing by 22% against the previous year. Overall, export price indicated temperate growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, carbon tetrachloride export price increased by +103.9% against 2017 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 an increase of 46%. The global export price peaked in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in the near future.
