Butter and Ghee Price in the United States (CIF) - 2022

In 2022, the average butter and ghee import price amounted to $6,929 per ton, increasing by 6.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import price indicated noticeable growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, butter and ghee import price increased by +16.2% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 an increase of 26% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $8,140 per ton. From 2019 to 2022, the average import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Ireland ($8,679 per ton), while the price for India ($1,426 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by New Zealand (+5.5%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

Butter and Ghee Price in the United States (FOB) - 2022

The average butter and ghee export price stood at $3,323 per ton in 2022, with a decrease of -10.5% against the previous year. Overall, the export price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the average export price increased by 10% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $3,956 per ton in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Egypt ($5,251 per ton), while the average price for exports to Mexico ($2,009 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Iran (+8.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Butter and Ghee Imports in the United States

In 2022, purchases abroad of butter and ghee was finally on the rise to reach 72K tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.6% from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being observed in certain years. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, butter and ghee imports surged to $500M in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +7.3% from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
