Broken Rice Price in Kenya (CIF) - 2022

The average broken rice import price stood at $257 per ton in 2022, rising by 3.4% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, saw a perceptible downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when the average import price increased by 29% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $432 per ton. From 2018 to 2022, the average import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Uganda ($336 per ton), while the price for Tanzania ($75 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Uganda (+3.0%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.

In 2022, the average broken rice export price amounted to $620 per ton, increasing by 8.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, export price indicated a temperate expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, broken rice export price decreased by -7.7% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when the average export price increased by 29% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $672 per ton. From 2021 to 2022, the average export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Rwanda ($755 per ton), while the average price for exports to Democratic Republic of the Congo ($474 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Burundi (+18.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

Broken Rice Imports in Kenya

In 2022, the amount of broken rice imported into Kenya reduced notably to 18K tons, dropping by -40% compared with 2021 figures. In general, imports, however, saw a significant expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 562% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of 29K tons, and then reduced notably in the following year.

In value terms, broken rice imports plummeted to $4.5M in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a significant expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 317%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $7.3M, and then contracted significantly in the following year.
