Banana and Plantain Price in Switzerland (CIF) - 2023
In September 2023, the average banana and plantain import price amounted to $1,186 per ton, declining by -2.3% against the previous month. Overall, the import price, however, continues to indicate slight growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in January 2023 when the average import price increased by 3.9% against the previous month. The import price peaked at $1,221 per ton in May 2023; afterwards, it flattened through to September 2023.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In September 2023, the country with the highest price was the Dominican Republic ($1,637 per ton), while the price for Cote d'Ivoire ($970 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From September 2022 to September 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Peru (+1.6%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average banana and plantain export price stood at $1,397 per ton in 2022, falling by -5.4% against the previous year. Overall, the export price saw a pronounced reduction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 an increase of 61%. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $2,470 per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($1,821 per ton), while the average price for exports to the Netherlands totaled $1,085 per ton.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the Netherlands (-0.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.
