Leek Market Size in Western Africa

The West African leek market rose rapidly to $X in 2023, increasing by X% against the previous year. Overall, consumption, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the market attained the peak level at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2023, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Leek Production in Western Africa

In value terms, leek production stood at $X in 2023 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, saw a mild contraction. The country with the largest volume of leek production was Niger (X tons), comprising approx. X% of total volume. The average leek yield reached X tons per ha in 2023, flattening at the year before. In general, the yield showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when the yield increased by X%. Over the period under review, the leek yield hit record highs at X tons per ha in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2023, the yield remained at a lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2023, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, leek exports declined significantly to $X in 2023. Over the period under review, exports, however, posted a significant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when exports increased by X% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2023, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Senegal prevails in exports structure, finishing at X tons, which was approx. X% of total exports in 2023. Ghana (X tons), Nigeria (X tons) and Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) took a little share of total exports.

Senegal was also the fastest-growing in terms of the leeks and other alliaceous vegetables exports, with a CAGR of X% from 2012 to 2023. At the same time, Ghana (X%) and Cote d'Ivoire (X%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Nigeria (X%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Imports in Western Africa

For the fourth year in a row, Western Africa recorded decline in overseas purchases of leeks and other alliaceous vegetables, which decreased by X% to X tons in 2023. Over the period under review, imports recorded a pronounced shrinkage. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when imports increased by X% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2023, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, leek imports dropped to $X in 2023. Total imports indicated a temperate expansion from 2012 to 2023: its value increased at an average annual rate of X% over the last eleven-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2023 figures, imports increased by X% against 2021 indices.
