In value terms, mango and mangosteen exports soared to $X in 2022. In general, exports showed buoyant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when exports increased by X%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

South Africa represented the key exporting country with an export of around X tons, which finished at X% of total exports. Mozambique (X tons) held a X% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Malawi (X%). The following exporters - Zambia (X tons) and Swaziland (X tons) - each finished at a X% share of total exports.

Exports from South Africa increased at an average annual rate of X% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Zambia (X%), Swaziland (X%), Malawi (X%) and Mozambique (X%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Zambia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of X% from 2012-2022. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Mozambique, Malawi, Zambia, South Africa and Swaziland increased by X, X, X, X and X percentage points, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

Imports in SADC

In 2022, overseas purchases of mangoes, mangosteens and guavas decreased by X% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year rising trend. In general, imports, however, enjoyed a pronounced expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of X%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2021, and then declined dramatically in the following year.

In value terms, mango and mangosteen imports declined rapidly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, posted temperate growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by X% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X, and then dropped dramatically in the following year.

Imports by Country

South Africa represented the major importer of mangoes, mangosteens and guavas in SADC, with the volume of imports amounting to X tons, which was near X% of total imports in 2022. Botswana (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Tanzania (X tons) and Namibia (X tons). All these countries together took near X% share of total imports. Lesotho (X tons) and Mozambique (X tons) held a relatively small share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to mango and mangosteen imports into South Africa stood at X%. At the same time, Lesotho (X%), Mozambique (X%) and Botswana (X%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Lesotho emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of X% from 2012-2022. Namibia experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Tanzania (X%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period.
