In value terms, gypsum and anhydrite exports dropped modestly to $X in 2023. In general, exports, however, saw strong growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of X%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2021; however, from 2022 to 2023, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
South Africa (X tons) and Tanzania (X tons) were the major exporters of gypsum and anhydrite in 2023, accounting for near X% and X% of total exports, respectively. Zimbabwe (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total exports with a X% share, followed by Angola (X%). The following exporters - Zambia (X tons) and Malawi (X tons) - together made up X% of total exports.
From 2012 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the key exporting countries, was attained by Zambia (with a CAGR of X%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Tanzania ($X) remains the largest gypsum and anhydrite supplier in SADC, comprising X% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by South Africa ($X), with a X% share of total exports. It was followed by Zambia, with a X% share.

Imports in SADC
After two years of growth, overseas purchases of gypsum and anhydrite decreased by X% to X tons in 2023. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a prominent increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2022, and then fell notably in the following year.
In value terms, gypsum and anhydrite imports contracted markedly to $X in 2023. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a remarkable increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of X%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2022, and then declined dramatically in the following year.
Imports by Country
South Africa represented the major importing country with an import of about X tons, which recorded X% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons), Zambia (X tons) and Zimbabwe (X tons), together committing a X% share of total imports. The following importers - Malawi (X tons) and Swaziland (X tons) - together made up X% of total imports.
Imports into South Africa increased at an average annual rate of X% from 2012 to 2023. At the same time, Zimbabwe (X%), Democratic Republic of the Congo (X%), Swaziland (X%), Zambia (X%) and Malawi (X%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Zimbabwe emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of X% from 2012-2023. From 2012 to 2023, the share of South Africa and Zimbabwe increased by X and X percentage points, respectively.
In value terms, Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X), Zambia ($X) and South Africa ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2023, with a combined X% share of total imports. Zimbabwe, Malawi and Swaziland lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further X%.
Zimbabwe, with a CAGR of X%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
