In 2022, shipments abroad of frozen cuts of chicken decreased by -7.6% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year rising trend. In general, exports saw a perceptible descent. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when exports increased by 26%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, frozen chicken cut exports rose significantly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a modest expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 23% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in the near future.

Exports by Country

South Africa represented the major exporter of frozen cuts of chicken in SADC, with the volume of exports accounting for X tons, which was approx. 67% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Namibia (X tons) and Zambia (X tons), together mixing up a 32% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to frozen chicken cut exports from South Africa stood at -6.5%. The export price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2022, picking up by 20% against the previous year. Export price indicated moderate growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, frozen chicken cut export price increased by +22.3% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 24%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 21% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, frozen chicken cut imports shrank dramatically to $X in 2022. In general, imports saw a perceptible curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 54% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

The purchases of the three major importers of frozen cuts of chicken, namely Angola, Democratic Republic of the Congo and South Africa, represented more than two-thirds of total import.
