Fertilizer Market Size in SADC

In 2023, after six years of growth, there was significant decline in the SADC fertilizer market, when its value decreased by X% to $X. The total consumption indicated a noticeable expansion from 2012 to 2023: its value increased at an average annual rate of X% over the last eleven-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2023 figures, consumption increased by X% against 2016 indices. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X, and then reduced in the following year.

Fertilizer Production in SADC

In value terms, fertilizer production expanded modestly to $X in 2023 estimated in export price. The total output value increased at an average annual rate of X% from 2012 to 2023; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the production volume increased by X%. Over the period under review, production reached the maximum level at $X in 2021; however, from 2022 to 2023, production remained at a lower figure.

Fertilizer Exports

Exports in SADC

After three years of growth, shipments abroad of fertilizers decreased by X% to X tons in 2023. Total exports indicated a prominent expansion from 2012 to 2023: its volume increased at an average annual rate of X% over the last eleven years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2023 figures, exports increased by X% against 2019 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when exports increased by X% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2022, and then shrank in the following year.

In value terms, fertilizer exports reduced to $X in 2023. Overall, exports, however, posted a buoyant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2022 when exports increased by X% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X, and then fell in the following year.

Exports by Country

South Africa represented the key exporting country with an export of about X tons, which resulted at X% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Mauritius (X tons), Mozambique (X tons), Tanzania (X tons), Madagascar (X tons) and Zambia (X tons), together comprising a X% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2023, average annual rates of growth with regard to fertilizer exports from South Africa stood at X%. At the same time, Zambia (X%), Madagascar (X%), Mauritius (X%), Mozambique (X%) and Tanzania (X%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Zambia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of X% from 2012-2023. While the share of Mauritius (X p.p.), Mozambique (X p.p.), Madagascar (X p.p.) and Zambia (X p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2023, the share of South Africa (X p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest fertilizer supplier in SADC, comprising X% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Mauritius ($X), with a X% share of total exports. It was followed by Tanzania, with a X% share.

From 2012 to 2023, the average annual growth rate of value in South Africa stood at X%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Mauritius (X% per year) and Tanzania (X% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2023, the export price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, declining by X% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2022 when the export price increased by X% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton, and then reduced in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2023, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Zambia ($X per ton), while Madagascar ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mauritius (X%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Fertilizer Imports

Imports in SADC

In 2023, supplies from abroad of fertilizers decreased by X% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a three-year rising trend. Total imports indicated a moderate increase from 2012 to 2023: its volume increased at an average annual rate of X% over the last eleven-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by X%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2022, and then fell markedly in the following year.

In value terms, fertilizer imports dropped remarkably to $X in 2023. In general, imports, however, posted a moderate expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2022 when imports increased by X% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X, and then dropped notably in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2023, South Africa (X tons) represented the largest importer of fertilizers, creating X% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Zambia (X tons), Tanzania (X tons), Zimbabwe (X tons) and Mozambique (X tons), together generating a X% share of total imports. The following importers - Malawi (X tons) and Angola (X tons) - together made up X% of total imports.

Imports into South Africa increased at an average annual rate of X% from 2012 to 2023. At the same time, Tanzania (X%), Mozambique (X%), Zambia (X%) and Angola (X%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Tanzania emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of X% from 2012-2023. By contrast, Zimbabwe (X%) and Malawi (X%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2023, the share of Tanzania, Zambia and Mozambique increased by X, X and X percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
