Garlic Market Size in the Middle East

In 2023, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in the Middle Eastern garlic market, when its value increased by X% to $X. Overall, consumption, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2023, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Garlic Production in the Middle East

In value terms, garlic production rose modestly to $X in 2023 estimated in export price. Overall, production saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of production peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2023, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2023 were Iran (X tons), Syrian Arab Republic (X tons) and Turkey (X tons), together comprising X% of total production. Saudi Arabia, Oman, Iraq and Yemen lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further X%.

From 2012 to 2023, the biggest increases were recorded for Oman (with a CAGR of X%), while production for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average garlic yield contracted dramatically to X tons per ha in 2023, which is down by X% compared with the previous year. Overall, the yield, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2022 when the yield increased by X% against the previous year. As a result, the yield attained the peak level of X tons per ha, and then declined rapidly in the following year. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

The garlic harvested area soared to X ha in 2023, jumping by X% on the previous year. Over the period under review, the harvested area, however, recorded a slight slump. The level of harvested area peaked at X ha in 2021; however, from 2022 to 2023, the harvested area stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports in the Middle East

Garlic exports skyrocketed to X tons in 2023, picking up by X% compared with the year before. In general, exports continue to indicate a strong increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of X% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2021; however, from 2022 to 2023, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, garlic exports soared to $X in 2023. Overall, exports enjoyed resilient growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2021; however, from 2022 to 2023, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Iran was the largest exporter of garlic in the Middle East, with the volume of exports reaching X tons, which was near X% of total exports in 2023. The United Arab Emirates (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a X% share, followed by Turkey (X%) and Syrian Arab Republic (X%). Oman (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Exports from Iran increased at an average annual rate of X% from 2012 to 2023. At the same time, Syrian Arab Republic (X%), Turkey (X%), Oman (X%) and the United Arab Emirates (X%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Syrian Arab Republic emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the Middle East, with a CAGR of X% from 2012-2023. There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2023, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Syrian Arab Republic ($X per ton), while Iran ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Imports in the Middle East

In 2023, purchases abroad of garlic increased by X% to X tons for the first time since 2020, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Total imports indicated a notable expansion from 2012 to 2023: its volume increased at an average annual rate of X% over the last eleven years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2023 figures, imports decreased by X% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of X% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2021 to 2023, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

From 2012 to 2023, average annual rates of growth with regard to garlic imports into the United Arab Emirates stood at X%. At the same time, Iraq (X%), Yemen (X%), Qatar (X%), Oman (X%) and Kuwait (X%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Iraq emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the Middle East, with a CAGR of X% from 2012-2023. By contrast, Saudi Arabia (X%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period.
