Tomato Market Size in MERCOSUR

The MERCOSUR tomato market rose remarkably to $X in 2023, with an increase of X% against the previous year. In general, consumption, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the market reached the maximum level at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2023, consumption remained at a lower figure.

Tomato Production in MERCOSUR

In value terms, tomato production expanded markedly to $X in 2023 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the production volume increased by X% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2023, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Brazil (X tons) constituted the country with the largest volume of tomato production, accounting for X% of total volume. Moreover, tomato production in Brazil exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Argentina (X tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Colombia (X tons), with a X% share.

From 2012 to 2023, the average annual growth rate of volume in Brazil was relatively modest. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual rates of production growth: Argentina (X% per year) and Colombia (X% per year).

The average tomato yield contracted modestly to X tons per ha in 2023, approximately reflecting the year before. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of X% from 2012 to 2023; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being observed throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of X%. Over the period under review, the tomato yield hit record highs at X tons per ha in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2023, the yield failed to regain momentum. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2023, approx. X ha of tomatoes were harvested in MERCOSUR; remaining stable against the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, the harvested area, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when the harvested area increased by X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to tomato production reached the maximum at X ha in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2023, the harvested area remained at a lower figure.

Exports in MERCOSUR

In 2023, exports of tomatoes in MERCOSUR shrank dramatically to X tons, falling by X% against 2022 figures. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a prominent expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of X% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2021 to 2023, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, tomato exports dropped remarkably to $X in 2023. In general, exports, however, posted a buoyant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of X%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2023, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Argentina was the main exporting country with an export of around X tons, which finished at X% of total exports. Peru (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with an X% share, followed by Brazil (X%). Colombia (X tons) took a little share of total exports.

Exports from Argentina increased at an average annual rate of X% from 2012 to 2023. At the same time, Brazil (X%), Peru (X%) and Colombia (X%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Brazil emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in MERCOSUR, with a CAGR of X% from 2012-2023. While the share of Peru (X p.p.) and Brazil (X p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2023, the share of Argentina (X p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest tomato supplying countries in MERCOSUR were Brazil ($X), Argentina ($X) and Peru ($X), with a combined X% share of total exports.

Brazil, with a CAGR of X%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2023, the export price in MERCOSUR amounted to $X per ton, jumping by X% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2023, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2023, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Colombia ($X per ton), while Argentina ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Brazil (X%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in MERCOSUR

In 2023, approx. X tons of tomatoes were imported in MERCOSUR; waning by X% against 2022. In general, imports, however, posted a prominent expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of X% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2021 to 2023, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, tomato imports fell markedly to $X in 2023. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw prominent growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of X% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2023, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

Paraguay represented the largest importer of tomatoes in MERCOSUR, with the volume of imports resulting at X tons, which was approx. X% of total imports in 2023. It was distantly followed by Chile (X tons), creating a X% share of total imports. The following importers - Uruguay (X tons) and Argentina (X tons) - each resulted at a X% share of total imports.

Imports into Paraguay increased at an average annual rate of X% from 2012 to 2023. At the same time, Chile (X%) and Uruguay (X%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Chile emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in MERCOSUR, with a CAGR of X% from 2012-2023. By contrast, Argentina (X%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Chile (X p.p.) and Argentina (X p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Paraguay saw its share reduced by X% from 2012 to 2023, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest tomato importing markets in MERCOSUR were Chile ($X), Paraguay ($X) and Uruguay ($X), together comprising X% of total imports.

Chile, with a CAGR of X%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2023, the import price in MERCOSUR amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of X% against the previous year. Import price indicated a modest increase from 2012 to 2023: its price increased at an average annual rate of X% over the last eleven-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2023 figures, tomato import price increased by X% against 2020 indices. Over the period under review, import prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2023, import prices remained at a lower figure.
