These countries were followed by Saudi Arabia, Algeria, Morocco, Iraq, Yemen, Syrian Arab Republic, Israel, Tunisia, Jordan and Lebanon, which together accounted for a further 48%.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of production, amongst the key producing countries, was attained by Israel (with a CAGR of +12.1%), while production for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Exports in MENA

For the third consecutive year, MENA recorded growth in overseas shipments of fresh or chilled cuts of chicken, which increased by 36% to X tons in 2021. In general, exports saw a strong increase. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, fresh chicken cut exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, exports posted buoyant growth. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

Saudi Arabia (X tons) and Jordan (X tons) represented the major exporters of fresh or chilled cuts of chicken in 2021, amounting to near 34% and 23% of total exports, respectively. The United Arab Emirates (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total exports with a 13% share, followed by Oman (12%), Turkey (12%) and Lebanon (4.7%).

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Jordan (with a CAGR of +40.2%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Saudi Arabia ($X) remains the largest fresh chicken cut supplier in MENA, comprising 49% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Jordan ($X), with a 17% share of total exports. It was followed by Oman, with a 17% share.

The export price in MENA stood at $X per ton in 2021, jumping by 15% against the previous year. Export price indicated a resilient increase from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +5.6% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, fresh chicken cut export price increased by +21.8% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when the export price increased by 36%. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Saudi Arabia ($X per ton), while Lebanon ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In general, imports recorded a buoyant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when imports increased by 101%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, fresh chicken cut imports soared to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports showed a buoyant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 75% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

The United Arab Emirates represented the major importing country with an import of about X tons, which recorded 46% of total imports. Iraq (X tons) held a 16% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Saudi Arabia (16%), Kuwait (11%) and Bahrain (5.4%). Syrian Arab Republic (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Imports into the United Arab Emirates increased at an average annual rate of +23.9% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Syrian Arab Republic (+28.3%), Kuwait (+19.4%), Saudi Arabia (+14.6%), Bahrain (+9.6%) and Iraq (+4.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Syrian Arab Republic emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in MENA, with a CAGR of +28.3% from 2012-2021. The United Arab Emirates (+26 p.p.), Kuwait (+4.2 p.p.), Syrian Arab Republic (+2.1 p.p.) and Saudi Arabia (+1.9 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Bahrain and Iraq saw its share reduced by -1.7% and -17.3% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.

In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported fresh or chilled cuts of chicken in MENA, comprising 59% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Kuwait ($X), with a 13% share of total imports. It was followed by Saudi Arabia, with a 9.5% share.

In the United Arab Emirates, fresh chicken cut imports increased at an average annual rate of +25.7% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Kuwait (+22.0% per year) and Saudi Arabia (+12.6% per year).

The import price in MENA stood at $X per ton in 2021, waning by -4.5% against the previous year. Over the last nine years, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.5%.
