Tobacco Market Size in Latin America and the Caribbean
In 2023, the Latin American tobacco market decreased by X% to $X, falling for the second consecutive year after two years of growth. Overall, consumption, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2023, consumption failed to regain momentum.
Tobacco Production in Latin America and the Caribbean
In value terms, tobacco production totaled $X in 2023 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when the production volume increased by X%. Over the period under review, production reached the maximum level at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2023, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Tobacco Exports
Exports in Latin America and the Caribbean
In 2023, overseas shipments of tobacco (smoking tobacco, chewing tobacco, snuff) were finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2020, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Total exports indicated a resilient increase from 2012 to 2023: its volume increased at an average annual rate of X% over the last eleven-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, tobacco exports soared to $X in 2023. Total exports indicated a temperate increase from 2012 to 2023: its value increased at an average annual rate of X% over the last eleven years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Exports by Country
Brazil represented the largest exporting country with an export of about X tons, which accounted for X% of total exports. It was distantly followed by the Dominican Republic (X tons), mixing up a X% share of total exports. The following exporters - Nicaragua (X tons) and Paraguay (X tons) - together made up X% of total exports.
From 2012 to 2023, average annual rates of growth with regard to tobacco exports from Brazil stood at X%. At the same time, the Dominican Republic (X%) and Paraguay (X%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, the Dominican Republic emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Latin America and the Caribbean, with a CAGR of X% from 2012-2023. Nicaragua experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. Brazil (X p.p.) and the Dominican Republic (X p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Nicaragua saw its share reduced by X% from 2012 to 2023, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Brazil ($X) remains the largest tobacco supplier in Latin America and the Caribbean, comprising X% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the Dominican Republic ($X), with a X% share of total exports. It was followed by Nicaragua, with a X% share.
In Brazil, tobacco exports increased at an average annual rate of X% over the period from 2012-2023. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the Dominican Republic (X% per year) and Nicaragua (X% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2023, the export price in Latin America and the Caribbean amounted to $X per ton, increasing by X% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2022 when the export price increased by X%. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2023, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2023, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the Dominican Republic ($X per ton), while Paraguay ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Nicaragua (X%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.
Tobacco Imports
Imports in Latin America and the Caribbean
After three years of decline, purchases abroad of tobacco (smoking tobacco, chewing tobacco, snuff) increased by X% to X tons in 2023. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of X% over the period from 2012 to 2023; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2023, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, tobacco imports skyrocketed to $X in 2023. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of X% over the period from 2012 to 2023; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of X% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2023 and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
Argentina was the key importer of tobacco (smoking tobacco, chewing tobacco, snuff) in Latin America and the Caribbean, with the volume of imports accounting for X tons, which was near X% of total imports in 2023. It was distantly followed by the Dominican Republic (X tons), Honduras (X tons) and Brazil (X tons), together committing a X% share of total imports. Paraguay (X tons) took a minor share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2023, average annual rates of growth with regard to tobacco imports into Argentina stood at X%. At the same time, Honduras (X%) and the Dominican Republic (X%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Honduras emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Latin America and the Caribbean, with a CAGR of X% from 2012-2023. By contrast, Brazil (X%) and Paraguay (X%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Argentina (X p.p.) and Honduras (X p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Brazil and Paraguay saw its share reduced by X% and X% from 2012 to 2023, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
