Fresh Whole Chicken Market Size in ECOWAS

The ECOWAS fresh whole chicken market contracted to $X in 2021, which is down by -8.1% against the previous year. The total consumption indicated a prominent expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.8% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, consumption increased by +9.8% against 2019 indices. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2020, and then contracted in the following year.

Fresh Whole Chicken Production in ECOWAS

In value terms, fresh whole chicken production shrank to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total production indicated a strong increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.5% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, production increased by +10.1% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 48% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2020, and then contracted in the following year.

Nigeria (X tons) remains the largest fresh whole chicken producing country in ECOWAS, comprising approx. 42% of total volume. Moreover, fresh whole chicken production in Nigeria exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Niger (X tons), fivefold. Ghana (X tons) ranked third in terms of total production with a 7.5% share.

In Nigeria, fresh whole chicken production increased at an average annual rate of +7.0% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual rates of production growth: Niger (+7.0% per year) and Ghana (+8.2% per year).

Fresh Whole Chicken Exports

Exports in ECOWAS

After two years of growth, overseas shipments of fresh or chilled whole chickens decreased by -75.4% to X tons in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, enjoyed a temperate increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 233%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons, and then shrank remarkably in the following year.

In value terms, fresh whole chicken exports shrank markedly to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate slight growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 295%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2020, and then shrank rapidly in the following year.

Exports by Country

Ghana represented the largest exporter of fresh or chilled whole chickens in ECOWAS, with the volume of exports reaching X tons, which was near 54% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Senegal (X tons) and Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), together creating a 43% share of total exports. Nigeria (X kg) held a minor share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to fresh whole chicken exports from Ghana stood at +6.4%. At the same time, Nigeria (+55.8%) and Senegal (+1.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Nigeria emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in ECOWAS, with a CAGR of +55.8% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Cote d'Ivoire (-2.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Ghana and Nigeria increased by +13 and +3 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, the largest fresh whole chicken supplying countries in ECOWAS were Senegal ($X), Ghana ($X) and Cote d'Ivoire ($X), together comprising 98% of total exports. These countries were followed by Nigeria, which accounted for a further 2%.

Nigeria, with a CAGR of +15.7%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in ECOWAS amounted to $X per ton, jumping by 15% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, continues to indicate a slight downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when the export price increased by 171% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2020 to 2021, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Senegal ($X per ton), while Ghana ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Senegal (+6.7%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

In 2021, overseas purchases of fresh or chilled whole chickens were finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2016, thus ending a four-year declining trend. In general, imports saw a notable increase. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, fresh whole chicken imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, imports continue to indicate notable growth. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

The purchases of the four major importers of fresh or chilled whole chickens, namely Ghana, Benin, Guinea and Togo, represented more than two-thirds of total import. Cabo Verde (X tons) took an 8.1% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Gambia (4.7%). Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Cote d'Ivoire (with a CAGR of +24.3%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Ghana ($X), Benin ($X) and Togo ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together comprising 62% of total imports. These countries were followed by Guinea, Cabo Verde, Cote d'Ivoire and Gambia, which together accounted for a further 32%.

In terms of the main importing countries, Cote d'Ivoire, with a CAGR of +23.7%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in ECOWAS stood at $X per ton in 2021, standing approx. at the previous year. In general, the import price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 14% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Cote d'Ivoire ($X per ton), while Gambia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Cabo Verde (+0.5%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
