Eggplant Market Size in Eastern Europe

In 2023, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in the East European eggplant market, when its value increased by X% to $X. Over the period under review, consumption, however, continues to indicate a perceptible decrease. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2023, consumption remained at a lower figure.

Eggplant Production in Eastern Europe

In value terms, eggplant production declined to $X in 2023 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, showed a noticeable decrease. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2022 when the production volume increased by X% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2023, production remained at a lower figure.

The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2023 were Romania (X tons), Ukraine (X tons) and Bulgaria (X tons), with a combined X% share of total production. Moldova and Belarus lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further X%.

From 2012 to 2023, the biggest increases were recorded for Moldova (with a CAGR of X%), while production for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the production figures.

The average eggplant yield stood at X tons per ha in 2023, with an increase of X% on 2022 figures. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of X% over the period from 2012 to 2023; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when the yield increased by X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the eggplant yield attained the peak level at X tons per ha in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2023, the yield failed to regain momentum. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

For the sixth year in a row, Eastern Europe recorded decline in shipments abroad of eggplants (aubergines), which decreased by X% to X tons in 2023. Overall, exports faced a deep reduction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of X%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2023, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, eggplant exports reached $X in 2023. Over the period under review, exports recorded a deep contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of X% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2023, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

In 2023, Poland (X tons) was the main exporter of eggplants (aubergines), mixing up X% of total exports. Belarus (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a X% share, followed by Lithuania (X%) and the Czech Republic (X%). The following exporters - Latvia (X tons), Romania (X tons) and Russia (X tons) - together made up X% of total exports.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Eastern Europe stood at $X per ton in 2023, with an increase of X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, continues to indicate a slight curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of X%. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2023, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the Czech Republic ($X per ton), while Russia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Imports in Eastern Europe

In 2023, supplies from abroad of eggplants (aubergines) was finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2017, thus ending a five-year declining trend. In general, imports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2023, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, eggplant imports expanded significantly to $X in 2023. Overall, imports, however, saw a pronounced descent. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of X% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2023, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

Russia represented the main importing country with an import of about X tons, which accounted for X% of total imports. Romania (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Poland (X tons), Bulgaria (X tons), the Czech Republic (X tons) and Ukraine (X tons). All these countries together took approx. X% share of total imports. Hungary (X tons) held a relatively small share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2023, average annual rates of growth with regard to eggplant imports into Russia stood at X%. At the same time, Romania (X%), Hungary (X%), Poland (X%), Ukraine (X%), Bulgaria (X%) and the Czech Republic (X%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Romania emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Eastern Europe, with a CAGR of X% from 2012-2023. Import Prices by Country

The import price in Eastern Europe stood at $X per ton in 2023, shrinking by X% against the previous year. In general, the import price showed a noticeable reduction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2022 an increase of X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2023, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2023, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the Czech Republic ($X per ton), while Bulgaria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
