In 2021, the amount of fresh or chilled whole chickens exported in ASEAN skyrocketed to X tons, with an increase of 41% on 2020 figures. Overall, exports showed a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 1,292%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2021 and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, fresh whole chicken exports surged to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports posted a strong increase. Fresh whole chicken imports dropped to X tons in 2021, with a decrease of -4.6% against the previous year's figure. Overall, imports faced a abrupt decline. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, fresh whole chicken imports reduced dramatically to $X in 2021. In general, imports saw a deep downturn. The smallest decline of -5.6% was in 2016. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Vietnam represented the main importer of fresh or chilled whole chickens in ASEAN, with the volume of imports recording X tons, which was near 79% of total imports in 2021. Myanmar (X tons) held an 11% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by the Philippines (5.8%). Singapore (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Imports into Vietnam decreased at an average annual rate of -21.2% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Singapore (+45.0%) and Myanmar (+12.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Singapore emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in ASEAN, with a CAGR of +45.0% from 2012-2021. By contrast, the Philippines (-12.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Myanmar (+11 p.p.), the Philippines (+3 p.p.) and Singapore (+2.8 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Vietnam saw its share reduced by -15.6% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.

In value terms, Vietnam ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported fresh or chilled whole chickens in ASEAN, comprising 70% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Myanmar ($X), with a 12% share of total imports. It was followed by Singapore, with a 9% share.

In Vietnam, fresh whole chicken imports decreased by an average annual rate of -19.8% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Myanmar (+20.3% per year) and Singapore (+42.6% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in ASEAN amounted to $X per ton, waning by -15.8% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.1%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when the import price increased by 28%.
